Job Loss Fear Grips Staff at Amazon’s Hyderabad Office

Hyderabad: Amazon Inc.’s announcement of global layoffs has sent employees in Hyderabad, home to the company’s largest office building in the world, into panic over fears of potential job losses. According to sources, the layoffs, which started in July this year, are expected to continue until the end of December.
The number of layoffs has risen sharply in recent weeks, with some teams reduced to half their original size, insiders said. The layoffs affected nearly all departments, including coordinators, transportation and transportation staff. Even long-serving employees with almost a decade of experience were not spared.
The company laid off nearly 14,000 employees worldwide. Staff at Amazon’s Hyderabad office attributed the move to a reduction in workload and fewer cases to handle.
An employee who lost his job shared his experience, saying he received a phone call on Saturday, followed by an email from the consulting firm he was hired from. The message stated that his contract had expired and that he would receive a one-month notice fee along with a full and final settlement. His employee ID was deactivated and he was asked to submit his exit form and take leave without dues.
“The job market is very bad right now. While I was getting ready for work on Monday, they sent us mail on Saturday evening without notice,” the employee said.
Employees hired through third-party consultancies were more affected than those working directly on Amazon’s payroll, the sources said. While there is speculation that AI automation could reduce manual workload, employees said much of the work still requires human involvement.
Many of the affected employees are still struggling to cope with the sudden layoff. Another employee said, “They could have given us at least a month or even a week notice. I still can’t get over the fact that I lost my job. Now other companies will see us as underperformers just because we were laid off.”
