Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., said Tuesday that if elected governor, former ICE agents would be barred from holding any future jobs in California or even getting a driver’s license.
President Donald Trump’s efforts to fulfill his campaign promise have faced major resistance in Minnesota, especially after two protesters were killed by law enforcement. Now, federal law enforcement agencies handling deportation operations have faced criticism, to the point where there are calls for leaders such as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or be removed.
“You said one of the things you need to see is Noem coming out,” CNN anchor Kate Bolduan said. “Since Alex Pretti was shot, the support for an effort that led to it in the House, an effort to force a vote on articles of impeachment against Noem, seems to have gained more support and a little more excitement. But after two impeachment attempts against Trump, including you, impeachment has become politically fraught for Democrats. Are you concerned that a real push to impeach Kristi Noem could backfire?”
“We’re not going to allow people to be vigilantes and tell the American people we can’t do anything about it,” Swalwell said. “And if you publicly execute two people within 10 days, there has to be consequences.”

“Of course, when the Democrats in the majority want to blame the president’s tariffs on the American people, we can do anything,” Swalwell said. “But I’m also appealing to governors. Kate, governors have tremendous power. And when I became governor of California, I said if you wear a mask in California, you lose your driver’s license. If you’ve worked for ICE in the past, you’re not employable in our state. These law enforcement agencies are going to prosecute you for kidnapping, battery, assault and murder of people in our communities.”
He continued, “As governor, we must go on the offensive. Otherwise, the most vulnerable people in our communities and the people who protect them, like Pretti and Good, will continue to be killed.”

That was a step up from his rhetoric earlier this month, when he claimed he would use his emergency powers as governor only to bar former ICE agents from state jobs in California.
“As governor, I will use my emergency powers and tell every government agency: ‘As a matter of policy, we do not hire ICE agents.’ Because these guys doing this job right now is a decision. “No one is saying you have to hold a gun and work for ICE,” Swalwell said earlier this month.
Swalwell’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
