Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel MP said: “The prosecution, political show trial and conviction of Jimmy Lai is an affront to democracy, personal liberty and freedom.
“His humiliating treatment and imprisonment at the hands of the authoritarian regime of the Chinese Communist Party was appalling.
“I admire the fortitude and courage of Jimmy and his family as they fight honorably in their campaign for his freedom and awareness of his treatment.
“Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer must now take Jimmy’s case directly to President Xi and demand that Jimmy be released from custody immediately so that his ordeal can end, he can return to Britain and be reunited with his family.
“The imposition of the National Security Law on Hong Kong is a violation of the freedoms that should be guaranteed under the Sino-British Joint Declaration, and the British Government has not done enough to oppose the suppression of freedoms and human rights in Hong Kong.”
