Speaker Mike Johnson warns Sharia law threat in America is a ‘serious problem’

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is sounding the alarm about the threat of Sharia law in the United States, warning that it directly contradicts the principles on which the United States was founded.

“There’s a lot of energy in the country and a lot of popular sentiment that the demand to impose sharia law in America is a serious problem,” Johnson told reporters at the House of Representatives’ annual policy meeting in Miami. he said.

“I think this is a serious problem. Sharia law and the imposition of sharia law is contrary to the U.S. Constitution.”

He’s R-Tenn., who wrote in X that “Muslims do not belong in American society.” He was responding to a question about the backlash against his agent, Andy Ogles.

The post was immediately attacked by Democrats as racist and bigoted; Some, including Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., demanded that Johnson “speak out against this hatred.”

Ogles, however, had no regrets. He concluded his post by saying, “If I said this about Christians, my comments wouldn’t even make the news. Please forgive me your moral outrage. Cry more.” He followed it up with a post that read:

Johnson said Ogles’ comments were “different language than I would use” but suggested he believed the Tennessee Republican was talking about immigrants who refuse to adapt to U.S. culture and values.

“When you come to a country and want to impose sharia law rather than assimilate, sharia law conflicts with the U.S. Constitution. That’s the conflict people are talking about,” Johnson said.

“This is not about people as Muslims. This is about those who are trying to impose a different belief system that is in direct conflict with the Constitution. I think that’s where this comes from.”

Conservatives in Congress have become more vocal about the threat of sharia law in recent months, with even Reps. Keith Self, R-Texas, and Chip Roy, R-Texas, moving to form the “America Without Sharia Caucus.”

Sharia generally refers to the rules of morality and behavior used by devout Muslims. Sharia law more specifically refers to the criminal law used in non-secular Islamic countries such as Iran.

In the most extreme cases, such as when ISIS controls parts of the Middle East, charges such as blasphemy can carry the death penalty. But religious freedom guarantees in the Constitution mean that Sharia law cannot be enforced at any level of government in the United States
