Stage Set for Election of Chairpersons, Mayors in Telangana

Hyderabad: The stage was set for the election of mayors and corporate mayors in Telangana on Monday afternoon.
Winning councilors from BRS, Congress, BJP and MIM, as well as independent candidates, reached the municipal offices from the camps to take oath before electing the chairman or mayors. There is confusion in the 37 municipalities that issued death sentences.
The ruling Congress, along with BRS and BJP, is leaving no stone unturned in winning the President and Mayor posts with the support of its councillors. In many municipalities, parties could not reach the magic number that would successfully complete the election process.
High tension prevailed in Thorrur in Mahbubabad district when nine BRS councilors along with former Minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao reached the municipal office in a private tourist bus from a resort.
In Karimnagar Corporation, BRS has decided to stay away from the election process while the BJP is trying to elect a Mayor from the party.
More than 200 independent candidates who won the elections in the recently concluded municipal elections in Telangana were vital for the election of Mayors and Chairpersons in municipalities and corporations. The role of independent candidates gained importance as death sentences were given in 36 municipalities. The ruling Congress and BRS are leaving no stone unturned in convincing independent candidates to garner their support in the election of Mayors and Mayors.
Both Congress and BRS shifted candidates won from their respective parties to resorts near Outer Ring Road (ORR) and Moinabad to prevent them from shifting to other parties. It is thought that several independent candidates have decided to support the ruling party in order to get more funds to develop the district they won, while others are also planning to support BRS.
Meanwhile, the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) has issued a circular regarding the conduct of indirect elections for the second regular elections to municipalities and municipal corporations across the state. The commission made the remarks based on the Supreme Court judgment (WP No. 20262 of 2021) on the eligibility of holding the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of municipalities and mayor and deputy mayor of municipal corporations, citing constitutional provisions (Articles 243-ZA, 243-K and 243-R) and the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019.
The SEC clarified that only Members of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Members of the State Legislative Council who are registered as electors or electors within the municipal area of the municipality and municipal corporation as per the criteria laid down by the Supreme Court can be simultaneously elected as ex-officio members of the municipality and municipal corporation.
