Staggering number of trans and gay TV characters AXED under Trump-era rollback of woke initiatives

With woke DEI policies and initiatives being rolled back across the country, LGBTQ representation is being greatly reduced on television.

Accordingly DeadlineApproximately 41% of the 489 LGBTQ characters on screen this year will not return due to series cancellations and endings.

There’s also the possibility of more queer characters being cut before the end of the year as additional cancellations are announced.

According to a report from GLAAD, a “large and alarming number” of trans-inclusive programs have ended, including Chaos and Clean Slate.

The turnaround comes at a time when diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs have been largely eliminated across the country.

On his first day back in office, President Trump wasted no time in signing a sweeping executive order that would eliminate DEI programs across all federal agencies.

He has since ordered the Justice Department to crack down on what he calls ‘unlawful DEI mandates’ in the private sector, and in April CBS Studios filed a lawsuit against parent company Paramount for having illegal diversity quotas that discriminate against straight white men.

The lawsuit was filed by the America First Legal Foundation, a conservative group founded by White House deputy chief Stephen Miller.

Miller filed the lawsuit on behalf of a Caucasian script coordinator for the CBS series SEAL Team, who accused Paramount of hiring and promoting less qualified minorities and female writers.

Among them are Paramount, Disney, Amazon Studios and Warner Bros. Major Hollywood players, including Discovery, have already scaled back or completely canceled their ventures following this pressure.

The ripple effect is now being felt around the world, as international affiliates of studios and streaming giants scramble to comply with Hollywood’s directives.

‘This was a complete U-turn,’ says a European programmer Hollywood Reporter.

‘Nobody in these companies cares about diversity anymore. “They don’t want to hear that,” he added.

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis spoke out against reducing LGBTQ representation on screen.

“At a time when diverse stories are under intense scrutiny, GLAAD is partnering with entertainment industry leaders to meet a clear call: Do not bow to pressure to reduce LGBTQ representation,” he said.

‘Freedom of expression includes the freedom to tell stories, and that includes the stories of our community.’

According to GLAAD’s report, ABC has the most LGBTQ characters of any major network.

NBC has the lowest ratings, but the report notes that the network recently aired the medical drama Brilliant Minds, which features a gay lead played by openly gay actor Zachary Quinto.

Some of the most notable LGBTQ shows that won’t return next year include HBO’s And Just Like That, Netflix’s gay teen romantic drama Heartstopper, and Hulu’s gay sitcom Mid-Century Modern.

Amazon Prime’s Clean Slate, starring transgender actress Laverne Cox, has also been cancelled.

“Shows like this are essential for authentic representation to reflect the LGBTQ experience and showcase the diversity of our community,” the report said.
