4 law enforcement officers shot in rural Kansas

CARBONDALE, Kan. (AP) — Four law enforcement officers were shot Saturday morning while responding to a residence in a rural area south of Topeka, Kansas.

The attack happened around 10:30 a.m., Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Melissa Underwood said. Three Osage County sheriff’s deputies and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper were shot.

Underwood said her circumstances are “still very fluid.”

A male suspect died from a gunshot wound, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and state Highway Patrol leaders said. A man was also injured and taken to the hospital in stable condition, officials said.

Deputies and troopers were responding to a domestic violence incident north of Carbondale. Authorities said they were at the scene for several minutes when gunshots were heard.

Multiple law enforcement agencies immediately responded to the call of the attack, authorities said.

Underwood said the area where the attack took place was a rural area close to U.S. Highway 75. He said there is no active threat to the public.
