UK’s Starmer says he is focused on doing his job as PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has come under intense pressure from within the Labor Party to resign after a series of poor local election results, says he remains focused on his job.

Labour’s heavy losses in the May 7 election have led to almost a quarter of MPs calling for him to go, and two rivals are openly vying to replace him, troubling investors who have pushed up the government’s borrowing costs.

“I am focused on the job that is required of me, which is to serve my country and fulfill my duties as prime minister of this country,” he told staff during a visit to Labor headquarters on Monday. he said.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy previously said he would not set a timetable for Starmer’s departure.

This comes after media reports over the weekend said he was weighing whether to announce his plan to resign.

Wes Streeting, who left the health ministry last week, said on Saturday he would not enter any formal leadership contest.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is also seeking a seat in parliament to challenge him.

Starmer has repeatedly said he intends to tackle any leadership challenges.

Any candidate wishing to challenge must have the support of 20 per cent of Labor members in parliament.

Labor currently has 403 seats, which equates to 81 supporters.
