Asda makes £75 change in all stores as 956 items affected | UK | News

A supermarket giant has launched a new price reduction campaign affecting almost 1,000 products. General storePrice comparison research found Asda was 5.5% cheaper than its rivals.
Grocer 33 compares prices across supermarkets (Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose – sometimes adding Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, Ocado, M&S and Amazon) each week, using a basket of 33 identical products that changes regularly. Last week Asda’s basket was just £74.98, 2.9% cheaper than the previous month. Thanks to price cuts, it became the cheapest supermarket for 14 out of 33 products, including Tilda rice, Casillero del Diablo wine, Lemsip Max and Arla Lactofree milk. The only other supermarket with a price below £80 was Sainsbury’s; With Nektar card savings of £6.21 the total was £79.34. In third place was Tesco, 8% behind Asda, with the basket priced at £81.47 due to Clubcard deals ending on 12 items.
Next up was Morrisons, which was 12% more expensive than Asda. The hamper cost £85.19, saving just £1.50. This was the biggest monthly price increase at 4.4%, and it wasn’t the cheapest item in the supermarket.
In last place was Waitrose, with a basket costing £90.33, 17% behind Asda. It offered the lowest prices on Ginger, Clover, tomato juice and Alpen muesli.
It comes after Asda announced plans to open 20 more Express stores across the UK to rival Tesco and Sainsbury’s; This indicates continued expansion into formats suitable for the chain.
The supermarket confirmed earlier this year that it would continue with plans to open more stores this year. The move will allow the supermarket to expand its footprint in places where it typically has a limited presence.
These areas include urban areas, residential areas and transportation centers with high pedestrian traffic. Asda’s Express stores will stock a total of 3,000 products, typically including own-label products from major brands, and customers will also be able to complete a quick ‘shopping’ or lunch on the go.
Customers will also find a variety of services such as an ATM and Amazon Collections and Returns, as well as a Costa Coffee machine, perfect for commuters.
