State police investigate crash, shooting that closed I-95 on Monday night

A portion of Interstate 95 was closed for approximately two hours the night of Dec. 29 as state police investigated a crash involving a shooting, Rhode Island State Police said in a press release sent Wednesday, Dec. 31.

State police have received multiple calls about a three-vehicle crash near the Smithfield Boulevard exit in Providence, state police said.

“Many people fled the scene on foot; others were transported by Providence Rescue to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries. One person was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound,” state police said.

Police determined that a person in one vehicle opened fire on the occupants of another vehicle before the car collided with another vehicle on the southbound side of the highway.

Police said the people involved were known to each other and the incident was believed to be a “targeted and isolated” incident.

No arrests were reported.
