‘Statistically sparkling’: WA’s best beaches for Christmas Day revealed

West Australians looking for the perfect Christmas at the beach are in luck with a new data analysis pinpointing coastal spots where warm temperatures, blue skies and next to no rain are more likely to hit on December 25.

A three-year study of Christmas Day weather by the Bureau of Historic Metology identified Shell Beach in Shark Bay as the number one place to spend Christmas in 2025, offering the most reliable festive beach weather in the state.

The research, conducted by Frameshop.com.au, analyzed maximum and minimum temperatures, rainfall and sunshine data from the past three Christmas Days to create an index of WA’s statistically most beautiful beaches.

“If you don’t want to leave the Christmas weather to chance, this index statistically identifies places where you will see sunshine all day, almost no clouds in sight and very little rain,” said Frameshop expert Mohammad.

“We want Australians to have great memories while on holiday, and Western Australia offers the best natural light and conditions in the country.”

Shell Beach in Shark Bay topped the list thanks to its average temperatures above 30C, zero rainfall, clear and bright sunshine and calm, swimmable festival conditions.

The iconic white-shelled coastline is already a holidaymaker favourite, and data suggests WA is as close as it gets to a guaranteed sparkling summer Christmas.

Local favorites such as Cottesloe Beach, Salmon Bay on Rottnest Island and The Basin also scored exceptionally high, providing almost uninterrupted sunshine and no measurable rain.

In the south, from Eagle Bay to Yallingup, warm, dry and photogenic conditions have been consistently maintained over the past three Christmas days.

Esperance’s favorites are also in a strong line-up; Twilight Beach and Wharton Beach both record temperatures in the mid-20s, minimal cloud and less than half a milliliter of rain.

The study showed WA beaches performed better than most of the country in terms of blue skies and dry conditions on Christmas Day.

Mohamad said the data could help families plan a more memorable Christmas morning outdoors.

“Whether you’re framing family photos or simply after the classic Australian beach photo, Western Australia provides the best natural light in the country,” he said.
