Stephen Colbert Is Baffled to Learn 22% of Americans Strongly Approve of Trump: ‘Who Are You?!’
Stephen Colbert commented on Donald Trump’s new poll numbers showing more than 22 percent of Americans “strongly approve” of the president, leaving the late-night host stunned.
During his monologue on “The Late Show” on Tuesday, Colbert lamented Trump’s high gas prices during the Iran War and suggested he’s not the only one feeling frustrated right now.
The comedian noted that “Trump’s popularity isn’t helped by the fact that he always ruins everything.” “You’re turning me left and right, baby, according to the new UMass YouGov poll’s approval rating is down to 33%.”
He continued: “That’s only one in three people. To put that in perspective, turn right. Now turn left. Both of these people are more popular than Donald Trump.”
Colbert went on to note that Trump’s other poll numbers don’t look encouraging, given that an average of 47.2% of Americans “strongly disapprove” of the president. But Colbert was surprised to learn that “there were still 22.4% who strongly approved of him.”
At that moment, Colbert spoke directly into the “Late Show” camera and clearly asked, “Who are you?!” he asked.
“I want gas to be expensive,” the comedian said while commenting on a MAGA supporter. “I want the Kennedy Center blown up. I know it’s a pipe dream, but is there a way to make Denmark hate us? Because I’d love it if the price of licorice increased too.”
According to Colbert, these weak poll numbers “may be spooking Trump,” as the president is reportedly “willing to end U.S. military action against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed,” according to the Wall Street Journal.
Trump will give an update on the conflict in Iran on Wednesday evening. However, it is unclear exactly what the president will share in his address to the nation.
