Stephen Colbert says he ‘absolutely should not’ run for president in 2028

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert told him earlier this month that he “absolutely” should not run for president in 2028.
“Yeah, I definitely shouldn’t run for president,” Colbert said. Slate’s “Political Gabfest” event On December 18, he added: “I understand why you want me to do it.”
After his initial reaction, he took a satirical tone, stating that he would need to meet with his family and faith leader after his show was over to decide whether he would be called upon for “greater service to this nation.”

“Because I believe that America is humanity’s last best hope, and if there is anything I can do to further the mission of our Founding Fathers, whose love of freedom and belief in human rights are in my heart as the blood in my veins and the strength in my arms. Why, who am I to say that I must run? But if I hear God’s call clearly…” Colbert said before the crowd began chanting his name.
Fellow panelists former CBS News anchor John Dickerson and New York Times writer Emily Bazelon agreed with his original comment, with Bazelon calling the idea a “disaster.”

Colbert before I ran for president as a Democrat in 2007 under the guise of the “Colbert Report” cartoon. Although he paid the $2,500 fee to be on the South Carolina Democratic Primary ballot, the South Carolina Democratic Primary Executive Council rejected his application because it believed he was not a serious candidate.
Colbert also floated the idea of running again on his show in 2012 and formed a committee to run for president in South Carolina. However, he could not meet the deadline for his name to be written on the ballot paper.

At the “Gabfest” event, Colbert also embraced Dickerson after it was learned that his last broadcast was for the “CBS Evening News.” Colbert hugged Dickerson and then flashed his middle finger in the air.

CBS announced in July that the final episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will air in May 2026.
