Stone Roses bassist dies aged 63

Gary “Mani” Mounfield, bassist of Manchester’s legendary band Stone Roses, has died at the age of 63.

A founding member of the band, Mounfield played on both of the Stone Roses’ albums and later reunited with them on their 2012 comeback tour.

In 1996 he joined another seminal band, Primal Scream, and played with them for 15 years.

The musician’s brother Greg announced his death with “the heaviest of hearts” In a post on Facebook. Mani’s bandmate Ian Brown led the memorial service Above the X he writes: “Rest in peace MAni X.”

Oasis singer Liam Gallagher shared: “I was completely shocked and devastated to hear the news about Mani. RIP R Kid, my hero.”

Mounfield’s wife Imelda died in November 2023, three years after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer. The couple has twin boys born in 2013.

Happy Mondays singer Rowetta shared on X: “I will miss you so much. Love to the boys, family and everyone who knew and loved him.”

Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess shared a photo of the couple celebrating Mounfield’s 63rd birthday days ago.

“One of the best in every respect,” Burgess wrote. “What a nice friend.”

Mounfield’s death came after he announced he would embark on a chat tour of venues across the UK; This tour would see him talk about his experiences and memories of Stone Roses and Primal Scream, starting in September next year.
