Storm Claudia live: Snow could hit UK next week after severe flooding in Monmouthshire prompts major incident

Where are the flood warnings in England?

As weather warnings become clearer across the UK, so do many of the weather warnings issued by the Environment Agency.

There are currently 58 flood warnings and 150 flood alerts.

Flood warnings have been issued in the Midlands, South West and Northern regions of England.

It comes after a major incident was declared in south Wales after the region was battered by wind and heavy rain during the onslaught of Storm Claudia.

The warning, issued in the early hours of Saturday morning, means there is a “serious risk to life” as emergency services are working around the clock for rescue and evacuation efforts.

Where will it snow next week?

It’s too early for forecasters to say for sure where the snow will fall.

But winter sleet and snow showers could be felt across northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, the North Yorkshire Moors, west Wales and the moors of south-west England, the BBC reports.

This may be because this area is exposed to cold winds from the north, which will bring some snow over Scotland and northern England on Tuesday and then spread into the Midlands and south-east England on Wednesday morning.

Monmouth suffered severe flooding in the early hours of Saturday 15 November, prompting South Wales Fire and Rescue to declare a major incident following the aftermath of Storm Claudia in Wales. Matt Jones, regional manager of the service, stated that the flood had reached serious levels and that the roads should be kept open so that emergency services could reach those who needed it most, and called on the public to stay away from the area completely. He added that conditions remained challenging, with fast-flowing water, closed roads and pressure on infrastructure, and crews were working tirelessly throughout the night to assist those affected. As of 10.50am on Saturday, four serious flood warnings have been issued for the River Monnow at Watery Lane, Over Monnow, the River Wye at Monmouth, Forge Road, the River Monnow at Osbaston and the River Monnow at Skenfrith.

Meteorology announced that cold weather may bring snow next week

The showers that lashed the UK on Friday will be replaced by below-freezing temperatures and possibly snowfall in the coming days.

The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather warning for the Midlands and parts of northern England from Monday as temperatures are set to drop by 8 degrees.

Colder conditions could bring snow showers to northern parts of England and hills on Wednesday, with the first frost of the season forecast for the south, according to the Met Office.

The long-range forecast calls for cold conditions to spread southwards by Wednesday, bringing snow showers to northern parts and the first frosts of the season in many parts of the south.

Towards the end of November, more showers are likely in the north and snowfall in the hills.

Rail: Storm Claudia damage disrupted tens of thousands of journeys

Independent’s travel correspondent Simon Calder reports:

Tens of thousands of rail passengers faced difficult journeys on Saturday due to damage caused by Storm Claudia.

Flooding in the Swindon area and between Chippenham and Bath Spa has closed the Great Western Railway’s main links to Bristol and South Wales.

“Flood waters have now receded allowing the lines to reopen,” says National Rail.

Passengers are warned: “When services return to normal, train services between these stations may be canceled, postponed or revised.”

Many GWR trains have been canceled or are running with long delays.

On the Wales-England border, no trains will be able to run between Shrewsbury and Cardiff “until water levels recede”.

The CrossCountry line between Gloucester and the Severn Tunnel Junction has reopened following flooding, but delays and cancellations will continue as the disruption recedes.

Blaenau Ffestiniog station in north Wales is closed.

The line between Macclesfield and Stockport in north-west England was closed due to damage to overhead cables.

“Train services passing through these stations may be diverted via Crewe,” says National Rail.

The route is the main link between London Euston and Manchester.
