Storm Claudia mapped: Where will be hit by downpours today as flooding poses ‘danger to life’

High winds and rain battered the UK during the onslaught of Storm Claudia, with flooding posing a “significant risk to life” in parts of Wales.

A major incident was declared in Monmouth, South Wales, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Emergency services worked tirelessly to carry out rescue and evacuation efforts.

Parts of the West Midlands were also affected by flooding, with strong winds causing trees to be uprooted and fall in Staffordshire and Manchester. In Ireland, the storm left nearly 5,000 homes, farms and businesses without power on Saturday morning.

It comes after the Met Office issued a yellow rain warning from noon to midnight on Friday, with 150mm of rain expected in parts of Wales.

A 24-hour yellow weather warning for wind and rain has also been put in place across the south of England, the Midlands, parts of Wales and south Scotland.

Storm Claudia, named by the Spanish Meteorological Service, is expected to affect Northern Ireland on Saturday, with a yellow weather warning warning for rain until noon, with up to 44mm of rain expected.

As of 11am on Saturday, the Environment Agency in England had issued 68 flood warnings and 161 flood warnings; Because some regions faced fast-flowing and deep flood waters after heavy rains.

South Wales Fire and Rescue area manager Matt Jones said conditions in Monmouth remained challenging with fast-moving water, road closures and pressure on infrastructure.

He said: “This is a large-scale incident and our teams and partners have been working tirelessly throughout the night and into today to help those affected.

“I would like to thank everyone involved for the professionalism and care they continue to demonstrate in very difficult circumstances.

“I would urge the public to avoid the Monmouth area altogether wherever possible. The flooding is serious and we need to keep roads clear so emergency services can reach the people who need us most. If you are in danger of life or property or need urgent assistance, please call 999.”
