Democrat Abigail Spanberger elected Virginia’s first female governor, former CIA officer defeats Republican Winsome Earle-Sears

Lagging behind in fundraising and lacking the support of President Donald Trump, Earle-Sears came up short against Spanberger, who will replace Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who is barred from serving consecutive terms.
The win reversed control of the governor’s mansion and underscored Trump’s shadow over the contest despite the local issues and candidate profiles shaping the race. Northern Virginia’s large federal workforce, affected by recent budget cuts and government shutdowns, also played a role.
Spanberger’s victory continues Virginia’s long-standing trend of electing a governor from the party opposite the incumbent president; because the state usually holds gubernatorial contests the year after the presidential election.
