Uttar Pradesh Member of Parliament Rajeev Rai’s complaint sparked controversy over Bengaluru’s traffic problems on November 30 after he publicly criticized the city’s traffic management on social media.

In a post tagging Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and senior police officials, the MP said that while he was on his way to the airport the same day, Dr. Rajkumar said he was stranded on Samadhi Road for more than an hour.

While many users supported his concern, others criticized him for expecting “special treatment”.

“Then leave on time for the airport during peak hours on Sunday sir. Why are you expecting special VVIP treatment? This is how we common people travel every day,” wrote user X Mukesh.

Mr Rai claimed that the Bengaluru traffic police did not respond to his multiple phone calls seeking help. He shared screenshots of his unanswered attempts. “Not a single cop is visible,” he wrote, calling the city’s traffic police “irresponsible” and “inefficient.” He said poor traffic management was damaging “the name and appeal of this beautiful city” and that it was already notorious for traffic congestion.

But a senior police officer said: Hindu That Mr. Rai’s claim is not true. “Goraguntepalya junction never works without police. Also, Sunday is the busiest hour, policemen will definitely be on the field,” the officer said.

Other users criticized the MP, saying that if he had access to police officers’ numbers, he should also know the appropriate channels to contact.

“Now you know how much the people are suffering… One day you are stuck, you are tearing down the roof… Just pay for the next flight… anyway you have nothing big to gain by joining the parliament session late… Enjoy the suffering of the people every day,” wrote Sajith Balagopalan, another user.

Supporting Mr Rai, Tarak, another user said: “I agree. The problem is not the traffic but the way it is managed. Bangalore is a great city, but the traffic police and very few people generally lack common sense. When there is an empty stretch of road and someone is still slowly dying, it feels like a crime. But it will be solved soon.”
