Student killed in second shooting at Kentucky State University in four months | Kentucky

At least one student was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting at a residence hall at Kentucky State University on Tuesday, and a suspect who was not a student at the school was in custody, authorities said.

The attack was the second in the same area of the university in four months.

Frankfort Deputy Police Chief Scott Tracy said at a news conference that the suspect in Tuesday’s shooting was not a Kentucky State student. Police responded quickly to the incident, Tracy said.

“Frankfort police believe this is an isolated incident and there are no active safety concerns on campus at this time,” he said.

Video from WLKY-TV in Louisville showed multiple police vehicles outside a row of dormitories and crime scene tape in the courtyard of the school in Frankfort, the state capital.

A student who was shot in a dormitory is in critical but stable condition, according to the university. The school is not immediately releasing the students’ names.

In the statement made by the school, it was stated that “We are in close contact with the families and provide them with all kinds of support” and that counseling and support services are available.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said in a video message posted on X that the attack “appears to be an isolated incident” and “is not an ongoing threat.”

“Violence has no place in our country or country. Please pray for the affected families and our KSU students. Let’s also pray for a world where this does not happen,” he said.

University classes, final exams and campus events have been canceled for the rest of the week, according to a statement from the school. The fall semester was scheduled to end Friday, according to the school’s website.

In the statement made by the school, it was said: “Students can return home if they wish.” “Additional guidance will be communicated as soon as possible.”

University president Koffi C. Akakpo called it a “senseless tragedy.”

“We are grieving the loss of one of our students,” he said at a press conference Tuesday evening. “As a parent, I cannot imagine receiving the call I made to parents today.”

On Aug. 17, someone fired multiple shots from a vehicle near the same residence hall, hitting two people the university said were not students. Frankfurt police said one victim was treated for minor injuries and another suffered serious injuries. The dormitory and at least one vehicle were damaged as a result of the fire.

Kentucky State is a public, historically black university with approximately 2,200 students. Lawmakers allowed the establishment of the school in 1886.

The school is located approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) east of the capitol building.
