Sudhakaran’s CM ambition puts Congress in a dilemma

The party was earlier grappling with differences over Shashi Tharoor and now its focus has shifted to convincing Sudhakaran. The senior leader is willing to contest the Assembly elections to stake a claim for the chief minister’s post if the Congress-led front secures a majority.

However, the party leadership is reluctant. Sources told ET that the Congress wants to encourage new leadership in the state and does not want to trigger a Lok Sabha by-poll by fielding any of its sitting MPs in the Assembly elections.
Sudhakaran recently went to Delhi to discuss candidate selection with the party high command, but returned to Kerala on Thursday to express his displeasure with the choices being considered. He posted an emotional message on Facebook on Friday.
“Kannur is the lifeblood of my heart. It is my Congress address in Kannur. From stones, knives, sickles and bombs, I stood at the front and fought to protect my brothers…” he wrote.
