Owaisi Hits Out At Assam CM Over Evictions

Guwahati: All India Majlis-e-Itehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who came here to campaign for the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), on Thursday accused Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of practicing hate politics to target minority communities in Assam.
While describing AIUDF leader Maulana Badrudin Ajmal as the “Messiah of the poor and the oppressed”, Mr Owaisi told reporters: “Did I make a video on social media showing Muslims being killed? Did I say that Muslims would be evacuated? Did I say that I would break their backbones? I did not say any of these. I am not creating controversy, the chief minister of Assam is doing it. We want to strengthen people’s faith in the Constitution.”
Mr Owaisi criticized the state government’s eviction attempts, claiming that due process was not followed. He said any action related to detection and deportation must strictly adhere to legal procedures and principles of natural justice.
Saying that he was here to strengthen the prospects of AIUDF candidates, the senior Muslim leader lashed out at the BJP government for its unilateral action against minorities.
Accusing the BJP of “breaking down homes and disrupting lives”, he said: “There is a proper process. You cannot act as judge, jury and executioner. The Constitution must be followed.”
Mr. Owasi also attacked the Congress party, accusing it of weakening the party in Assam due to defections. “Who will speak for minority rights if everyone joins BJP and RSS?” he asked.
Responding to the Assam chief minister’s rhetoric against AIUDF leaders, Mr. Owasi said the debate should not be reduced to individual ambitions.
“The issue is not about Ajmal’s personal ambition. It is about ensuring that the poor and the oppressed get their constitutional rights and a voice in the Assembly,” he said, urging voters to support the AIUDF.
Mr. Owaisi is scheduled to address several rallies in Barpeta, Darrang, Morigaon, Nagaon and Hojai districts as part of the party’s campaign ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections.
His visit marks AIMIM’s broadening support towards the east following the party’s performance in the Bihar Assembly elections, in which it won five seats, and signals sharper competition in minority-dominated constituencies in Assam.
AIUDF has fielded candidates from 30 constituencies and Owaisi expressed confidence that the party will be able to challenge the BJP if it gets enough public support.
