Sundar Pichai net worth: What Google’s latest pay package means for the Indian-origin CEO’s wealth?

Sundar Pichai is set to become one of the highest-paid CEOs in the world after Google decided to increase his total potential salary to $692 million ( 6,361 crore to be paid in the next three years.

However, the bulk of Pichai’s package comes from performance stock units (PSUs), whose ultimate value depends largely on how well parent company Alphabet performs for shareholders.

The Indian-origin executive joined Google in 2004 and rose quickly, earning four promotions over the next 11 years before being named the company’s CEO in 2015. Under his leadership, Google’s market capitalization has increased nearly sevenfold over the past decade, from $535 billion to $3.6 trillion, and briefly surpassed $4 trillion in January of this year.

According to Forbes Real Time Billionaires, Sundar Pichai’s current net worth is $1.5 billion.

The sharp rise in Google’s valuation over the years has significantly increased Pichai’s personal wealth and helped make the 53-year-old former McKinsey & Company consultant a billionaire.

Since most of the most recent pay packet is in the form of stock, it will not count in net worth unless it vests, as it has no immediate, realizable value and is typically lost if the employee leaves the company.

According to trade filings, Pichai currently earns an annual salary of $2 million.

It last received a stock award in December 2022 worth $218 million, structured similarly to the most recent compensation.

In addition to these stock-based rewards, personal security-related expenses covered by the company further increase its earnings. These personal security costs have risen to $8.3 million by 2024, according to a report from the Financial Times.

Pichai and his wife, Anjali, meanwhile, own 1.67 million shares of Google, worth $498 million based on the company’s Friday closing stock price of $298, according to regulatory filings.

Sundar Pichai’s career and education

Pichai, whose full name is actually Pichai Sundararajan, grew up in Chennai, India. Before he and his younger brother were born, his father worked as an electrical engineer and his mother worked as a stenographer.

Google’s managing director holds a degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from IIT Kharagpur.

In 1993, Pichai moved to the United States and received a master’s degree from Stanford. He then went to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for his MBA.

When he joined Google in 2004, he started as VP of product management and focused on the Google Toolbar. As he rose through the ranks, Pichai came to be seen as the “right-hand man” of Google co-founder and former CEO Larry Page, according to a report from Business Insider.
