Emergency services race to scene of train derailment in Cumbria

The North West Ambulance Service said emergency services were called to the train derailment near Shap in Cumbria.

The trust dispatched ‘resources’ to the scene this morning following reports that a train had derailed between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District stations.

All lines between Penrith and Oxenholme have been closed and disruption is expected until the end of the day.

North West Ambulance Service said they were assessing the incident.

Other emergency service personnel were also at the scene, the trust said.

“Our priority is to ensure that people get the medical help they need as quickly as possible,” the statement said.

Avanti West Coast said on social media: ‘All lines are blocked due to train derailment between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District.

‘We strongly advise our customers not to travel north of Preston today.’

The train company added that trips passing through these stations may be canceled or delayed for up to 120 minutes.

In National Rail’s posts on site X, it was stated that the Transpennine Express line was affected.

National Rail said: ‘Major disruption is expected between Carlisle and Preston until the end of the day.

‘A train derailment between Penrith and Oxenholme means all lines are closed. Trains running between Carlisle and Preston may be delayed by up to 120 minutes or cancelled.’
