The Supreme Court on Thursday, January 15, 2026, refused to entertain the petition filed by the Vijay starrer’s production house. Jana Nayagan Against the stay order passed by the Division Bench of the Madras High Court on approval of the film.
A Bench headed by Justice Dipankar Datta questioned the “bubble speed” with which the Single Judge directed the issuance of the censure certificate on January 9. The bench said the producer did not object to the January 6 decision of the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to send the film to a revision committee.
KVN senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi said his client was “devastated”.
“But why do you say that?” Justice Datta asked the senior lawyer.
Mr Rohatgi said films and the publicity created around them were “perishable commodities”.
“If so [film] If it is delayed, people lose interest. It ceases to have any value. I lost everything,” Mr. Rohatgi lamented.

The court asked Mr. Rohatgi to raise his allegations before the Division Bench of the Madras High Court. He asked the Supreme Court Bench to decide on the petition pending before him on January 20.
The two-judge bench of the Supreme Court had withdrawn the Single Judge order granting the film a U/A 16+ certificate, just a few hours after the order was passed on January 9.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta represented the CBFC and the District Officer before the Supreme Court.
The CBFC stated that one of the five members of the review committee had lodged a complaint with the CBFC Chairman stating that their objections had not been properly considered before making the recommendation.

He had argued that the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024 empower the President to send the film to the revision committee if he does not accept the recommendation of the review panel. The Board argued that judicial review of the merits of the issuance of censorship certificates was limited.
