California Democrats introduce bill to ban ICE vehicle rentals statewide

California Democratic lawmakers introduced a bill Wednesday that would ban U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from renting cars from car rental companies.
Invoice It was introduced by Assemblywoman Jessica Caloza (D-52) and Assemblywoman Liz Ortega (D-20) is listed as the lead author.
The text of the bill reads: “Existing law generally regulates the business of public rental of passenger vehicles. The law prohibits a rental company from taking various actions, including using electronic surveillance technology to track a renter for the purpose of requiring the renter to purchase a damage waiver, optional insurance, or other optional good or service, and imposing fines or surcharges for the renter’s use of a rental vehicle.”

The text of the bill also states that “a rental company would be prohibited from renting vehicles to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”
Tensions against ICE have risen following the death of Renee Nicole Good, who was shot and killed by an ICE agent earlier this month after she tried to hit an officer with her vehicle after refusing to come out, authorities said. Protests against federal agents have continued to grow since the Border Patrol killing of Alex Pretti on Saturday.
ICE earlier this month reported He said that there was an increase of over 1,300 percent in attacks, a 3,200 percent increase in vehicle attacks against them, and an 8,000 percent increase in death threats.

Caloza’s biography at X says he is a “proud immigrant” and alumnus of former President Barack ObamaOrtega’s administration says he has “led the fight for vibrant, healthy and diverse communities” for more than two decades.
