Ex-Army man discovered dead in flat as police arrest 49-year-old in murder probe

A former army man was found dead in a flat in Leicestershire as police arrested another man as part of a murder investigation.

Simon Geary, 49, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the flat in Brook Street, Syston, just after 11.45am on Tuesday.

Believing Mr Geary had been assaulted, detectives later arrested a 49-year-old man on suspicion of murder. The man remains in custody.

Meanwhile, in a statement released through Leicestershire Police, Mr Geary’s family described him as a “gentle, caring soul”.

The statement said: “Simon was a much-loved son and brother. His support of our family will never be forgotten. He was a caring soul who served his country in the Army and we are so proud of what he achieved in his career.”

“We ask the public to respect our privacy at this very difficult time.”

Officers working at the scene of Mr Geary’s death are speaking to residents and reviewing CCTV footage to establish the victim’s movements before he died.

The area was cordoned off to allow forensic officers and a specialist search team to examine the flat.

Detective inspector Kevin Hames said: “A team of detectives from the major crime squad, supported by specialist resources and local neighborhood officers, are working to understand exactly what happened.

“We believe the incident occurred yesterday morning at the flat in George Toon Court. “The victim and the man in custody know each other and although our investigation is still at an early stage we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

“There are officers in the area speaking to anyone who may have seen or heard anything that could assist our investigation. If you have not been spoken to but have some information that may be useful please contact us.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information regarding the investigation to call 101, quoting crime reference 25*748093.
