The boss of the tech industry’s peak lobbying group has resigned 16 months after taking the top job, citing concerns about his ability to work effectively from home.

Former Afterpay executive Damian Kassabgi lives in Byron Bay and said he is stepping down as CEO of the Australian Technology Council to better maintain his work-life balance.

“I wanted to share some news,” Kassabgi wrote in a letter to TCA members seen by this imprint.

“I have informed the board of my intention to step down as CEO of TCA. For me, being in regional Australia with a young family means I am looking for a better, healthier balance (rather than being on a plane all the time). There will be a transition period and I will remain CEO until the new year.”

“As many of you know, I love the industry and have always viewed this role as giving back to an industry that has been good for me and my career. I intend to remain in this role if the board is replaced in a way that will ensure a smooth transition. I am very proud to play a small but vital role in such an important industry.”

TCA represents many of Australia’s largest technology companies, including Canva, Atlassian, SafetyCulture and AirTrunk.

The resignation comes at a critical time for the industry, which is grappling with how best to regulate artificial intelligence and take advantage of economic opportunities.

Technology Council chairman Scott Farquhar, former co-CEO of Atlassian, said Kassabgi was a valuable asset to TCA and the Australian technology sector.

“We will continue to work together throughout the leadership transition,” he said in a statement. “The board wishes Damian every success in the future.”
