Bride kills herself after groom’s family criticised her ‘revealing’ and ‘provocative’ wedding dress

A bride committed suicide after her husband’s family criticized her wedding dress for being ‘too revealing’ and ‘provocative’.

Lyaman Mammadli, 19, was accused of appearing ‘naked’ on his big day as his shoulders were exposed.

His father, Murad Bayramov, said that he was disturbed by the criticism and committed suicide a short time later in the garden of his family’s house in Mingachevir, Azerbaijan.

‘My daughter’s son-in-law and his family caused a fight in my house because of her wedding dress,’ he said. ‘My daughter couldn’t stand it and killed herself.’

Although Mammadli’s religion is not stated, Azerbaijan is a Muslim-majority nation.

Her father vehemently denied media reports that his daughter felt under pressure to marry an older man, 33-year-old Elnur Memmedli.

The father said, ‘After the celebration, Elnur came to our house with her parents and created a big argument.’

‘They said: ‘What a disgrace. ‘How can you let your daughter wear such a shameful, low-cut wedding dress?’

‘We said it was a normal dress, the kind of dress many brides wear. However, they did not calm down and continued to argue.

‘The dispute continued the next day,’ he said.

Her husband’s parents accused her of ‘humiliating their son and family’.

The grieving father said, ‘My daughter could not stand it. He ended his life in the distress and emotional turmoil he experienced.’

Her new husband came to the funeral, but the distraught father ‘kicked them out’, saying he ‘didn’t let them stay’.

Police are now investigating whether criminal charges should be opened regarding the ‘bullying’ the bride experienced before her tragic death.

It comes just a week after an adviser to the Iranian Ayatollah who helped organize a crackdown on anti-hijab protesters sparked outrage in Iran after allowing his daughter to marry in a “fashion-show” dress.

In the images circulating on social media, Ali Shamkhani, the chief advisor to Iran’s religious leader and a member of the Goodness Council, is seen accompanying his daughter Fatemeh to the wedding hall at the luxurious Espinas Palace Hotel in Tehran.

The bride wore a low-cut, strapless white dress.

The Western-style wedding sparked outrage on Iranian social media, with many accusing Shamkhani of hypocrisy, considering mandatory hijab and hijab laws that have restricted women’s attire for decades.

Shamkhani, a long-time ally of Ali Khamenei, previously served as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), the body responsible for the regime’s national security, between 2013 and 2023.

She was in that position when the government launched a brutal crackdown on protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian who died in police custody in 2022 after being arrested for allegedly violating rules requiring women to wear a headscarf.

Footage of her daughter’s wedding, allegedly leaked on channel X on October 17, comes amid reports that the country plans to deploy 80,000 new morality police officers in Tehran to ensure women comply with the Islamic dress code, according to independent TV network Iran International.

People online pointed out the bride’s ‘revealing’ outfit and her mother’s low neckline, as well as the lavish nature of the ceremony in an environment where young people cannot afford to get married.

Nearly half of Iran’s population of 92 million was below the poverty line in 2022, according to reports by the Iranian Statistics Center.

Exiled Iranian women’s rights activist Masih Alinejad wrote: ‘The daughter of Ali Shamkhani, one of the Islamic Republic’s top practitioners, had a lavish wedding in a strapless dress.

‘Meanwhile, in Iran, women are beaten for showing their hair and young people cannot afford to get married. This video angered millions of Iranians. Because they impose “Islamic values” on everyone except themselves with bullets, batons and prisons.

‘This is not hypocrisy, it is the system. They preach “modesty” while their own daughters parade in designer dresses. The message couldn’t be clearer: the rules are for you, not them.’
