Numbers, often, do not reflect the truth. Tamil Nadu’s 52% high gross registration rate (GER) in higher education is masked and emphasized by the evaluation of a state planning commission published in December 2023, as well as serious deficiencies in the curriculum transactions and evaluation.
The report was a claim of Tamil Nadu’s decay in the field of higher education. Question articles for the final exams for engineering and art and science issues were not forced to use analytical or problem solving methods to students; On the contrary, there were questions that included only the remembrance of concepts that encouraged rote learning. These deficiencies in pedagogical methods directly affected the learning outcomes reflected by the placement performance of the institutions.
So, how did the state react?
After having infuriated his fingers for about a year, the government launched an training program for the Faculty of all state universities and state colleges in December 2024. Review Bloom’s taxonomy is a framework to classify learning outputs based on six cognitive levels – so remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create. Although the first two levels are largely related to the remembrance of concepts, the next four level requires higher -grade thinking and problem -solving skills.
Improving the quality of education
Tamil Nadu Higher Education State Council (TANSCHE) Vice President Vijayakumar, the state of improvement of the quality of higher education in the state, “In these training programs carried out in the workshop mode, the results of the larger program are taught to comply with the results of the course,” he said. “We want to create the capacity to fresh analytical and problem solving questions to evaluate students.” This change should be brought gradually in order to avoid disturbance.
Giving an example, Mr. Vijayakumar said that the investigation, which is a K4 level feature in revised Bloom’s taxonomy for science issues, could be essentially in a laboratory, but it was delayed to focus on the laboratory curriculum.
So far, approximately 2,000 faculty members have been trained in approximately 20 sessions, but it seems to be a long order to extend the program to cover all of the 50,000 faculty members throughout the state. The Council received 180 master trainers who will then train other faculty members. Vijayakumar, “We want to meet as much ground as possible during this academic year,” he added. The registration officers and supervisors of all public universities have undergone this training.
In the workshops that last all day long, a summary is given to the faculty members about the university grants commission (UGC) adopted by the All India Technical Education Council (AICTE) and the learning outcoming curriculum (LOF) formulated by the result -based education (OBE). They must then write the course results to reflect the results of the final program. A group of discussions and feedback follows this.
As a follow -up of this, the Council plans to control all the question papers of public universities and autonomous colleges about the percentage of questions based on high -level thinking skills. Perhaps it takes some time to notice any concrete result, but these first steps need to be taken and dragged.
