T20 World Cup 2026 results: Pakistan beat Sri Lanka but eliminated as New Zealand reach semi-finals

Sahibzada Farhan made a magnificent century as Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by five runs in the T20 World Cup Super 8s but missed out on a semi-final spot on net run rate.

Farhan had nine fours and five sixes in his 100 off 60 balls as Pakistan posted 212-8, their highest ever total in the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan needed to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 runs or less to ensure their net run rate was better than New Zealand in Group 2.

However, Sri Lanka managed to get through 15.5 overs as they lost five wickets which saw the Black Caps advance to the knockout stage.

This saw New Zealand finish with a net run rate of +1.390, taking them into second place ahead of Pakistan (-0.123).

Sri Lanka fell just short of achieving the second-highest chase in World Cup history after skipper Dasun Shanaka’s late-round knock while Pakistan’s players were on the move.

Needing 28 runs in the final, Shanaka hit an unbeaten 76 off 31 balls, hitting four and three sixes.

But with six needed for Sri Lanka victory, Shaheen Afridi came back into the game and scored two with sweeping yorkers.

Earlier, the 176-run clash between Farhan and Fakhar Zaman had given Pakistan hope of fulfilling what looked like a big ambition on paper.

Fakhar, who started to open up again after his middle-order knock against England, played his part by hitting a hard-hitting 84 off 42 balls en route.

In his second innings of this World Cup, Fakhar hit nine fours and four sixes while Sri Lanka’s bowlers were skinned all over.

But after his dismissal, Pakistan struggled to maintain the momentum with 14 runs in the last two overs as Dilshan Madushanka claimed 3-33.
