Chancellor of the Exchequer Jim Chalmers’ fifth budget reveals little improvement in the government’s financial position and the economy is markedly weaker; inflation is expected to rise to 5% and economic growth is significantly weaker due to the war against Iran.

With the government’s major tax changes to negative gearing and capital gains taxation, and key NDIS savings measures not fully kicking in until the end of the decade, forward forecasts in the budget see continued high levels of spending and large deficits despite significant increases in tax revenue.
