David Lammy hits out at ‘brass neck’ of Robert Jenrick | News

David Lammy has accused Robert Jenrick of being “brass-necked” over comments made about an immigrant sex offender who was wrongly released.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Monday (October 27), the shadow justice secretary said the release of Ethiopian asylum seeker Hadush Kebatu was a “national shame”.

While he accused the deputy prime minister of “acting like he was angry at what happened”, he also criticized the government’s Criminal Code Bill, which provides for the early release of convicts who show good behavior.

Mr Lammy hit back, telling Mr Jenrick he should “hang his head in shame”. He said 14 years of Conservative governments had led to the “disintegration of the courts and prisons”.

“He’s coming here and he’s got the brass neck to give the impression that this started just 14 months ago,” Mr Lammy said.
