Chamarajanagar district’s first Government Law College inaugurated

After years of efforts, the first Government Law College of Chamarajanagar district was inaugurated in the town on Friday, December 27, 2025.
Inaugurating the Government Law College, MSIL president C. Puttaranga Shetty, who is also the MLA representing Chamarajanagar, recalled that the process of establishing the college in the district started years ago with the equally hard work of late former MP R. Dhruvanarayan.
The district’s first law college has been established due to continuous efforts, he said, while calling upon the students of the district to study diligently and bring recognition to the district. He said students should successfully complete a law degree and get higher opportunities.
The inauguration of the Government Law College in Chamarajanagar comes months after permission was granted by the Bar Council of India earlier this year following an objection by current MP Sunil Bose.
While the State Government had earlier already permitted three-year LLB and five-year BA LLB courses, Mr. Bose had written a letter to the Bar Council in April this year highlighting the challenges faced by local students who have to travel long distances to study law and often face financial and logistical problems.
Meanwhile, Mr. Shetty, in his speech at the inauguration of the Government Law College, stated that the district already has an engineering, medical, ITI, residential degree college, a university and also an agricultural science college. All these facilities have been provided to develop the district educationally, he said, while adding that a separate building for the law college will be constructed in one or two years.
Meanwhile, Chamarajanagar Urban Development Authority (CHUDA) Chairman Mohammed Asghar Munna, while speaking at the event, said that education is given high priority in the district with institutions offering courses in various disciplines. “After years of effort, students now have the opportunity to study law in the district,” he said.
KS Lalithabai, Principal of Government Law College, said Mr. Shetty provided furniture worth ₹13 lakh to the college, while Mr. Bose donated books worth ₹5 lakh.
Ms. Ashwini, Assistant Professor from the college, said that three-year law courses have been started now and she hopes that the five-year integrated undergraduate course will also be started in the coming years.
