10 people, Including 3 Govt Officers, Injured As Tripura Bandh Turns Violent

Agartala: Ten people, including three government officials, were injured in Tripura’s Dhalai district on Thursday evening when a lockdown called by a newly formed union turned violent, prompting the government to impose prohibitory orders, officials said.

The 24-hour bandh was called by the ‘Tripura Civil Society’ demanding implementation of the Tiprasa Agreement, identification of illegal immigrants and establishment of detention camps in every district.

Violence broke out at Santinagar Market in Dhalai’s Kamalpur subdivision when shopkeepers tried to open their shops around 6 pm, officials said.

“Bandh supporters attacked shopkeepers and villagers with latis and hurled stones indiscriminately. As a result, 10 people were injured, including BDO Abhijit Majumdar, who served as administrative magistrate of Salema,” Tripura Police spokesperson Rajdeep Deb told PTI.

Kamalpur SDPO Samudra Debbarma and government engineer of Salema block Animesh Saha were also injured. He said the three officers were shifted to Agartala Govt Medical College (AGMC) as their condition was critical.

He added that the rest of the injured were taken to Kamalpur hospital and were discharged after treatment.

Deb said the situation was tense but under control with senior police officers led by SP Mihirlal Das of Dhalai being on the spot along with heavy reinforcements.

District Magistrate Vivek HB, in a notification, said: “There is information of scattered incidents of clashes following the bandh called by some political parties and other organizations today i.e. 23 October 2025.

“And although it has been deemed necessary to impose restrictions on the movement of people in Kamalpur sub-division, Dhalai district, Tripura… I am satisfied that there are sufficient grounds to impose restrictions under section 163 of BNSS to prevent danger to human life, public property and tranquility.”

According to the notification, the restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.

Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the violence and stated that the administration has been instructed to take swift and stern action against those responsible.

The bandh, which started at 6 am, caused a huge uproar in the hills governed by the Tipra Motha Party-led Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. In these areas, stores remained closed and vehicles were taken off the roads.

The impact of the band was relatively less in the plains.

Train services between Agartala and Dharmanagar were affected due to bandh supporters blocking the tracks, but services remained normal on the Agartala-Sabroom route, police said.

CM Saha said neither the government nor the people supported the bandh.

“By organizing a strike, you can only attract media attention, but the public does not like it. Government offices are functioning as usual in the state. People prefer to stay inside, those calling for a strike out of fear. It would have been good if the bandh could have been avoided,” he said.

Senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman said Tipra Motha Party was behind the group.

“The bandh aims to deceive the people of Tiprasa ahead of the TTAADC and village committee elections,” he said.

“Why will common people suffer due to the Centre’s dilly-dallying attitude in implementing the Tiprasa Accord? The BJP-led government allowed the group to turn the bandh into a huge success,” he said.

Pradyot Deb Barma-led Tipra Motha is part of the BJP-led government in the state.
