“You can’t make a billion dollars,” Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday. “You can gain market power. You can break the rules. You can do all kinds of things. You can abuse labor laws. You can pay people less than they’re worth. But you can’t earn that, right? And so you have to create a myth… you have to create a myth of gaining it.”

After being rebuffed, he doubled down on his comments, claiming that the original American Revolution was fought against the “billionaires of their time.”

“I want to talk about how this fits into the legacy of our country, because America was founded… You look at Thomas Jefferson writing to Madison to rebel against the British aristocracy,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “The American Revolution was against the billionaires of its day. And we declare our independence from the excessive marriage of wealth, power, and state, where the voices of ordinary people do not exist.”

Called out when his comments about X went viral, Cruz elaborated on his opinion and explained that many “billionaires” at the time greatly helped finance the Revolutionary War.

“No one has ever raised a billion dollars, but the richest people in America are the people who finance and support the revolution against government power,” Cruz said. “And like the little Marxist that he is, he takes that story and turns it on its head and says that the revolution was against American free enterprise, which financed the revolution, and what they were fighting for was to give the government more power. He’s the King George in this story.”

The Texas senator also accused Ocasio-Cortez of promoting communism by trying to rewrite history and warned her that communist nations have devastating consequences.

“I’m sure AOC doesn’t know the facts, but wherever her system of government is implemented, which is communism, the result is crushing poverty, hunger, pain, misery, as well as in terms of human rights, murder, torture, imprisonment, and in China at least concentration camps. That’s exactly what the left stands for. And they don’t know enough and they’re not honest enough to admit it,” Cruz said.

After receiving criticism for her comments claiming billionaires did not “earn” their wealth, Ocasio-Cortez defended her claims about X.

“The biggest form of theft in America is wage theft. $50 billion a year is stolen from American workers,” he wrote. “Some people are angry that I’m pointing this out. That’s their job. Let them call me shrill, stupid, inexperienced, girly, uneducated – these people will say anything to distract from or highlight the fact that working people are being ripped off, and giving people a fair shake means we need to have an adult conversation about ruling out abuse of power.”
