Punjab Election Results 2025 Live: AAP vs Congress locked in tough fight as counting of votes for Block Samiti and Zila Parishad chunav underway

Counting of votes in Punjab’s local elections, including Zila community and panchayat samiti elections, began on Wednesday morning amid tight security. The counting of ballot papers started at 08:00 in the morning in 154 centers established across the state. The elections witnessed a multi-party contest in which all major political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party, contested the zila community and panchayat samiti polls.

Early trends of Punjab local body elections show that the ruling AAP is leading in both Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections in Ludhiana, The Hindustan Times reported. Latest trends show that AAP is ahead in 10 of the 25 Zila Parishad seats and is giving a tough fight to the Congress, which is ahead in eight seats. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is leading on four seats, while Independent candidates are ahead on two seats. One seat is still in contention.

Shiromani Akali Dal’s candidate from Baluana village Satvir Kaur clinched victory in the local elections held in Punjab on Wednesday, according to Hindustan Times. Meanwhile, Congress’ Baljinder Singh Simbal Majra won the Block Samiti election from Sotal Zone-8 in Kharar village, according to The Tribune. Akali candidates (Attari district) also celebrated winning the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in Amritsar.

Candidates of all major political parties (Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP) contested the zila community and panchayat samiti polls on party symbols. On December 14, opposition parties Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal accused the ruling AAP of engaging in “blatant electoral malpractices” during the election. They had earlier targeted the Bhagwant Mann government, accusing it of using the government machinery to ensure that its candidates filed nomination papers and were rejected.
