The incident occurred near Tadcaster Grammar School.

A teenage girl was killed and another girl was seriously injured in a crash involving a minibus and a car in North Yorkshire, police said.

Emergency services were called to Toulston Lane, near Tadcaster Grammar School, at around 12.30pm following reports of a white Mercedes Sprinter van colliding with a Hyundai i10.

Police said the bus was carrying the driver as well as nine passengers aged between 16 and 18 at the time of the crash.

North Yorkshire Police said the 40-year-old female driver of the Hyundai was arrested in connection with the investigation.

Police added that the other passengers and the man driving the minibus were treated at hospital for minor injuries.

A spokesman said the van was heading towards Sherburn when the light-coloured Hyundai entered Toulston Lane from Rudgate.

Toulston Lane was closed to traffic while police investigations continued.

In a message to parents, Tadcaster Grammar School said the site would be closed tomorrow as it would “not be safe for students”.

BBC Look North correspondent Olivia Richwald, speaking from the scene earlier, said there was a large cordon covering three roads near Tadcaster Grammar School.

He said: “We saw two vehicles behind the cordon, one a small, pale car with what appeared to be a dented front bumper.

“The second one is bigger, maybe a minibus or a small bus. It’s behind a tarpaulin.

“Police will continue to guard the scene tonight.”

He added: “The road is quiet and it’s not a residential area so there’s no one around except the odd car approaching the road closure signs and turning around.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has footage of the incident is asked to contact police.
