After Bihar election victory, NDA finalises power-sharing deal: Which party gets what?

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has secured a decisive victory in the recently concluded Bihar assembly elections and now it is time to form a government. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will return for a tenth term, NDTV reported, citing sources familiar with the talks on power sharing. However, after an important meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the report stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to be more represented in the state cabinet.

According to the report, the BJP, which won a few more seats than its ally JD(U), will be represented by 15 to 16 ministers in the new government. The report also stated that around 14 ministers will be selected from Nitish Kumar’s JD(U). Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vikas), which has 19 seats, may get three cabinet berths. Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha are expected to get a ministerial role each. The leaders agreed on a formula of one ministerial position for every six MLAs, the report said.

The NDA has emerged victorious in the Bihar assembly elections, the results of which were declared on Friday. While the alliance reached the double century and won 202 seats, the BJP won 89 of them, becoming the only major party. It was followed by JD(U), which won 85 seats. The opposition alliance or Mahagathbandhan suffered a humiliating defeat and secured a total of 35 seats; Of these, RJD won 25 and Congress won 6. Former poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) has failed to open its account despite significant campaigns and fielding candidates in almost all constituencies.
