Three people dead and gunman on the run after shooting in NSW town | New South Wales
Three people have been fatally shot and a gunman is on the run following a shooting rampage in a central-west NSW town.
A police operation is ongoing at Lake Cargelligo, three hours southwest of Dubbo, NSW police said on Thursday.
Emergency services were called to the area at around 16.40 upon reports of an armed attack.
The gunman remains at large. Police resources from surrounding areas in the western region were brought in to capture him.
Police confirmed that two women and a man died, while another man was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The police called on citizens to stay at home. Between 1,300 and 1,500 people live in Lake Cargelligo.
“We urge the public to avoid the area and residents to stay indoors,” police said.
Guardian Australia understands police are not treating the incident as terrorism-related.
Roy Butler, the NSW MP for Barwon, which takes Lake Cargelligo, shared on social media that he learned the tragic news immediately after getting off the plane.
“It’s a terrible situation and it’s still ongoing, so we don’t have a lot of information. My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” he said.
