Blow for seaside city as sports shop with 40 UK branches to close | UK | News

French sports brand Decathlon has 40 branches across the UK and 5 in Scotland. However, the Aberdeen store will close its doors within a few days.

Known for its sports equipment, clothing and accessories, Decathlon offers products at different levels in more than 70 sports branches, as well as famous brands such as Adidas, Nike and Puma. This follows the closure of Ikea, which was a huge loss for Aberdeen.

Granite City shoppers will now have to travel 130 miles to the nearest store in Edinburgh if they want to shop at the high street retailer.

Much to the surprise of its customers, signs appeared in the windows of the Union Square location, coinciding with a massive closing sale featuring items discounted by up to 50%.

Scottish customers now have just four locations in the country, including the Edinburgh store at Hermiston Gate Retail Park, Almondvale West Retail Park in Livingston and two stores in Glasgow; one at Silverburn shopping centre, the other at Braehead shopping centre, Renfrew.

The store first opened in October 2020, just after the country’s first lockdown, and offered a bike service, as well as a tennis, badminton and squash racket lacing service, and an in-store workshop that could print on shirts, jackets, shorts, bags and more.

Customers shared their thoughts about the closure on social media.

One person said: “One of the only stores I go to for shopping in the city.”

Another stated: “Soon there will be nothing but vape shops or eateries in Aberdeen.”

A third wrote: “Oh my god! I go there so often. I think it’s so much better than Sports Direct.”

Another wrote: “There’s some good gear out there, another one is causing havoc.”

A fifth user agreed: “Not ideal! Best waterproof boots ever.”

Responding to the news, another person wrote online: “Closing next week anyway! I was planning to buy something for the kids’ Christmas! Damn!”

Decathlon’s Aberdeen branch will close its doors for the last time this weekend, Sunday 16 November.
