Great Southern lands $337k grant to drive WA gold and platinum hunt
Two deep holes totaling 1,600 meters will explore the depth potential of the gold system and offer the first real look at the rocks and structures passing through the Great Southern’s Rosemont Shear slice; this data could unlock not just the Ogilvies, but possibly the entire Duketon generation.
Previous drilling at Golden Boulder has already produced some eye-catching successes, including 5 meters at 14.57 grams gold per tonne from 41 metres, and 4 meters at 5.64 g/t from 63 metres. Historical work between 1900 and 1955 also resulted in the extraction of 1,915 tons for 1,761 ounces of gold with an average of 28.6 g/t, yielding abundant products.
Meanwhile, at Diorite Hill, a single hole will target two hidden layers selected from seismic data recently reprocessed by Geoscience Australia. The layers, called Units A and B, are believed to be similar to South Africa’s legendary Merensky Reef, one of the richest platinum deposits on the planet, the company’s geologists said.
No explorer has gone deep enough to test these hidden areas beneath a cover layer. Management says this use of seismic data is a first for Western Australia and could pave the way for a brand new mining state.
Great Southern will start with a reverse-circulation front collar up to 120m to drill into weathered ground, followed by 780m of diamond core drilling drilling through fresh rock to hit both targets.
While Duketon and East Laverton grab the headlines, Great Southern and its heavyweight joint venture partner, South African gold giant Gold Fields, are rolling the dice in Far North Queensland.
The duo launched a high-impact diamond drilling campaign in Edinburgh Park and pursued two prominent polarizing targets called Leichhardt Creek and Mt Dillon; both of these demonstrate characteristics of large gold-copper-silver systems of intrusion.
With EIS drilling scheduled to begin in early 2026, Great Southern now has the firepower to pursue both the gold-rich depths of Duketon and the platinum potential of East Laverton.
Success on both fronts could be a game-changer and set the company up for its next big growth spurt in Western Australia’s mining hub.
