A UK fish and chip shop business that has been serving customers across the country since 1865 has been rescued from administration.

Henry Nuttall Ltd, which supplies equipment to fish and chip shops, is understood to have gone into administration at the start of this month after 161 years in business and is now part of the RGM Leeds Group. In a statement shared on Facebook, Henry Nuttall Ltd said: “Henry Nuttall is now part of the RGM Leeds group with Hopkins.

“This is a positive step that strengthens the long-term future of our business while allowing us to continue operating as the independent brand you know and trust. Nothing changes for our customers. The same people, products, values and commitment to service remain firmly in place. Day-to-day operations continue as normal, with the added benefit of long-term investment and behind-the-scenes support.”

The company supplied the first fish and chip shops, which opened in 1860, with Malin’s in London and J Lees in Lancashire claiming to be the first shop. The website states that Henry Nuttall Ltd was founded in 1865 as the popularity of fish and chips became evident in England and Ireland.

The business initially started trading from a small back street shop in Rochdale. After the war the company grew and grew, with new chip shops in the area often using Nuttall’s product line. In the late 1930s the success of the business led to a move to Castle Works on Holmes Street in Rochdale, after which the company came into family ownership with over 30 years of industry experience.

Today the business is based in Sheffield with a Bristol office and service center and covers chip shops across the UK.
