Primark, Superdrug and 2 major retailers to close 41 stores in UK – full list | UK | News

A total of 41 stores are planned to close in the UK; Primark, Superdrug, River Island and Poundland are all closing in January as pressure on the UK high street continues to mount. Some of the closures have already taken place, while others are expected to affect towns and cities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland throughout the month.
Primark has already closed its store at The Orchards Shopping Center in Dartford, with its last day of trading taking place on January 3. The fashion retailer said the decision came after concerns about the condition of the building and was believed to be the first store closure in more than 10 years.
Philippa Nibbs, Primark’s UK South and South East sales director, said: he told The Sun: “This difficult decision was taken because the extensive repairs required to the building were unsustainable given its proximity to two other Primark stores.
“We are pleased that more than half of our colleagues will be taking up roles in nearby stores and we are focusing on supporting our colleagues who are leaving.”
Health and beauty chain Superdrug also confirmed that its long-standing store on Dudley High Street will close at the end of the month after trading in the town for more than 40 years.
The store at 38A High Street will close on January 31 and the unit will be taken over by discount retailer Savers, which is expected to open on February 12.
Fashion brand River Island also announced plans to close 27 stores in January 2026 as it continues to reshape its physical footprint.
Discount retailer Poundland is expected to close 12 branches in January as part of a restructuring program approved by the High Court after it was sold for £1 to investment firm Gordon Brothers.
