Brendon McCullum: Sacking England coach would have been ‘easy thing to do’ – ECB chief

Sacking head coach Brendon McCullum following England’s Ashes debacle would be “an easy thing to do”, according to England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Richard Gould.
McCullum, director of cricket Rob Key and Test captain Ben Stokes will remain in their posts despite the 4-1 Test defeat in Australia being a disastrous tour due to poor planning, substandard performances and off-field problems.
Gould was discussing the findings of the tour review with Key at Lord’s on Monday.
“I saw the driving drive and determination in our leadership group that we were lucky enough to learn from the Ashes and move forward,” Gould said.
“These are all individuals who have other things to do with their lives. They are all determined to do what is best for England and learn the obvious lessons.”
Gould is the son of former Wales and Wimbledon football manager Bobby and previously served as chief executive of Bristol City Football Club.
“My father was a football manager,” he said. “Layoffs were part of the job and not necessarily the right thing to do. Moving people can sometimes be an easy thing to do. That’s not the path we’re going to take.”
