Mukul Roy, former Union Railway Minister, passes away after prolonged illness

Senior politician and former Railway Minister Mukul Roy died of heart attack at a private hospital in Kolkata on Monday, February 23, 2026, his family said.

He was 71 years old.

Mr. Roy breathed his last at a private hospital at 1.30 am, his son Subhranshu Roy said, adding that he had been in a coma for the last few days.

Mr. Roy was one of the founding members of TMC when the party was formed in 1998.

He later joined the BJP in 2017 due to disagreements with the party.

Mr. Roy was MLA on a BJP ticket from Krishnanagar Uttar constituency in the 2021 West Bengal assembly polls, but returned to TMC after the polls.

During his long political career, he served as Railway Minister in the UPA-2 government in 2011, when TMC was a part of the Centre.

He was elected to Rajya Sabha from West Bengal twice.
