Military veterans able to download digital ID card

Veterans will be able to start applying for a digital version of their ID cards starting Friday.

Approximately 1.8 million veterans are eligible to download the new digital ID on their smartphones; Ministers say the app could act as a “case study” to show the public how the technology would work for a scheme planned for all British citizens and residents.

The government says physical veterans cards will continue to be issued, but the digital version will allow cardholders to more easily prove their status when accessing public services.

Digital government minister Ian Murray said veterans’ digital ID could also help the UK-wide program address “legitimate concerns around privacy and security”.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announces plans Last month for a broader scheme as part of efforts to crack down on illegal work. It will come into effect by 2029 and will be mandatory for work.

The digital veterans’ card is optional, but the government says it will allow former service members to claim benefits such as GP and mental health support, supported accommodation, career advice, as well as discounted entry prices to museums and cash earned from their purchases.

Murray said the veteran ID is “probably by default a demonstration to the public,” that it’s the first use case of having digital credentials on your smartphone, and that digital credentials are the first type of verifiable ID the government is rolling out now.

Technology Minister Liz Kendall said: “We are modernizing our public services so we can align with people’s lives and keep up with the digital world we live in.

“The digital veterans card will help remove barriers, reduce bureaucracy and make it easier for people to access the public services they need.”

The digital veterans card will be the first document to be stored on the government’s One Login smartphone app. Digital driver’s licenses will be implemented at a later date.
