Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said during an appearance on MS NOW Wednesday morning that he could “help save” the military from President Donald Trump.
Warner previewed the questions he plans to ask U.S. Navy Adm. Frank M. Bradley when Bradley testifies Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, where Warner serves as vice chairman.
He focused on concerns about Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s controversial attacks in the Caribbean, adding that although he trusted Bradley, he did not believe Hegseth was honest.

“Remember, this is an administration that treated the uniformed military with unprecedented disrespect while they were all summoned to a pep rally in front of Hegseth and Trump,” Warner said. “This is an administration that fires uniformed generals from the head of the NSA, the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency.”
He continued, “And I think in a lot of ways the uniformed military can help save us from this president and his lame men like Hegseth, because I think their allegiance is to the Constitution, not to Trump. And I expect Bradley to be committed to that, too.”

Warner became the latest Democrat to suggest the military would act as a check on the Trump administration after six Democratic lawmakers urged service members to resist “illegal” orders.
“What gives me hope is I talk to military members all the time. They tell me I don’t appreciate it enough and the people don’t appreciate it enough; when Congress is no longer a check on the president and the judiciary at the Supreme Court is barely a check, military members tell me, ‘We can be a check,'” he said. Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., told Don Lemon last month.

He continued, “What they’re essentially saying is, ‘We’re not going to betray our oath to the Constitution just because this guy tells us so.’ Although not codified as such (they are not an organ of government in themselves), their honor and integrity may save us.”

Former President Barack Obama suggested Monday that there is “resistance” in the military to what he described as the “politicization” of the Trump administration.

“I don’t expect the Department of Justice or our military to become politicized,” Obama said. “And I don’t think that’s happening. I think there’s resistance to it, especially in the military, but the extent to which it’s been encouraged is, you know, something that I’ve been advising other countries not to do.”
