Abhishek Banerjee alleges security threat on airport premises; Trinamool claims ‘murder bid’ by BJP

Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee claimed that he faced a security threat on the premises of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here on Friday night (June 19, 2026).

In his post on his social media account on Saturday, June 20, 2026, he claimed that “armed people were caught” while he was leaving the airport. [in the parking area]In a widely circulated video, a man wearing a yellow kurta is seen trying to hide a gun under a cloth in the airport premises. He was reportedly dragged out by Trinamool supporters and others. Hindu did not fact-check the viral video.

Trinamool senior leaders condemned the incident. Senior Trinamool leader and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien asked whether this was an attempt to kill Mr. Banerjee. MP Sagarika Ghose asked the police to take immediate action against the accused and questioned the functioning of the new BJP government in the state.

“An @BJP4Bengal goon ARMED WITH WEAPONS probably planned to kill our Hon’ble National General Secretary Shri @abhishekaitc! Such is the state of law and order under the watchful eye of @SuvenduWB, criminals are now roaming free, emboldened enough to carry out brazen attacks with absolute impunity,” the Trinamool official said, sharing a video of the alleged perpetrator.

Late on Friday night, June 19, 2026, when Mr. Banerjee was scheduled to arrive at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport from Delhi, Trinamool and BJP supporters clashed outside the airport, causing mayhem.

Trinamool supporters who came to the airport to meet Mr. Banerjee also alleged that women supporters were beaten and other supporters were heckled.

Trinamool has repeatedly complained about attacks on its leaders after the party’s defeat in the May elections. Mr. Banerjee, MLA Kunal Ghosh, former Ministers, councilors and many other leaders were subjected to egg pelting by mobs. However, the BJP leadership denied any direct link to the attacks.

Mr Banerjee, Trinamool’s second-in-command, was one of the first leaders in the state in 15 years to be attacked within a month of the party’s fall from power.
