Moment fire rips through massive Birmingham factory: Residents warned to stay indoors

A fire broke out at a massive factory in Birmingham on Wednesday night, setting the entire two-storey building ablaze.

While 75 firefighters and 13 teams were called to the scene just after 19:00, residents were warned to stay in their homes. They were still fighting the fire early Thursday morning.

Flames engulfed a carpet warehouse and gutted two large units, while people nearby reported hearing shocking explosions and loud noises.

Carpet retail store Sam Carpets was demolished as locals reported seeing black smoke billowing from miles away.

Nearby residents were warned to stay indoors as dramatic drone footage showed the extent of the fire.

Firefighters are currently working in three sectors to prevent the fire from spreading further.

West Midlands Fire Service: ‘At 7.13pm on 7 January we were alerted to a significant fire involving a large carpet storage unit on the Tyseley Industrial Estate, Steeleys Road, Tyseley.

‘The fire involved 100 per cent of the two-storey brick-built factory unit measuring approximately 100m x 40m.

‘The 14 fire trucks, three hydraulic platforms, specialist units and fire marshals bring the total number of WMFS personnel present at the scene to over 75.

‘Teams are trying to control the fire using special equipment such as hydraulic platforms, unmanned aerial vehicles and breathing apparatus.

‘This will likely be a long-term event and more significant updates will be provided when possible.

‘Local Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area.’

In an update at 11pm on Wednesday, the force said crews continued to make ‘good progress’ at the scene but activities at the site were ‘unlikely to be scaled back for some time’.

The images show how close the busy industrial area is to Birmingham City Centre, with reports stating the fire was visible for miles across the Midlands city.

Sam Carpet Ltd has its warehouse at 10-11 floors on the Tyseley Industrial Estate. It is a 25-year-old business located in units.

Photos show that the fire, which had been going on for several hours, completely engulfed the store.

Firefighters are seen using cranes as well as drones and other specialized equipment to drop water into the tank.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed.
