Odisha, Chhattisgarh Move Closer to Settlement in Mahanadi Water Dispute

BHUBANESWAR: The Efforts to break the dead end on the Mahanadi River water dispute, Odisha and Chhattisgarh governments inform the court of ongoing negotiations aiming to reach a friendly settlement.

At the hearing of Saturday, Odisha was represented by Pitambar Acharya, a lawyer General (AG), who stated that both states intensified discussions under the mediation of the center. The sources said the court directed to present a progress report on talks until October 11th.

The senior officials of both states, including chief secretaries and senior water resources department officials, organized detailed negotiations on Friday. Authorities, “constructive” and said that a breakthrough can pave the way.

Acharya told journalists, the Central Water Commission (CWC) will not clean the new projects in the river until the dispute was resolved.

“The way the discussions accelerated, we hope to reach a solution. The Court sought a report about negotiations until October 11,” he said.

The dispute has not been solved for more than seven years, and the previous distribution was accused of not making progress. Authorities said the change in the government has now gained a new momentum of reconciliation efforts.
